Callah, a lovely young Samoyed, was a pet of Steven Vaughn, a banker and hobbyist dog breeder. They resided in a lovely home in Baltimore, Maryland. Callah's only litter was quite the accident, at least for Mr Vaughn. On a trip to the Yukon, she became quite smitten with a sled dog named Manahasset. Manahasset was a fairly average sized husky of the broken red type. He was always pleasant to other dogs, even those not on his team. he was known to be fair and wise, never overly dominant unless needed. He was a top lead sledder, for a man named Markus Riley, for 3 years. After two weeks of buying, selling, and the like, Mr Vaughn left with a pregnant Callah, which he wouldnt find out about until weeks later.
Callah pined for her distant mate, as did Set, there in the cold northern lands. Her litter consisted of five healthy puppies, four males and a female. All white, matching their mother, there was the eldest, Harmond, Simoriah, the only bitch, and Jerimiah, a rather clumsy male. The other two, Garamond and Orion, the youngest two, were a lovely rust and white, just like their distant father.
The pups grew without hindrance, and were a lively bunch! As any resourceful human would, Mr. Vaughn had the boys sold off as soon as they were old enough to go. He kept the bitch, Simoriah, out of a soft place in his heart, and because he knew it would hurt Callah too much to lose them all. Sim was her mother's treasure. She was taught all there was to know about being the proper pet. How to sit proper, how to do Master's favorite tricks. How to keep her fur neat and clean. Always adore the humans, and keep them pleased, and they will keep you safe and loved. Sim learned eagerly. She was always curious, always pleasant. She did her best to make mother proud, and Master happy. It was no wonder she was allowed to go on Master's latest trip to the cold Yukon.
Cold. Dammit it was soooo cold! Simoriah did -not- like the trip north. AT ALL. Sim was upset by the cage she was in, upset by the cold weather, upset by every little detail of the journey.
The arrival was less than welcomed for Callah and her daughter, who by now was a lovely young lady, fully grown. The bark across the white land was that Set was dead. Set's death was a tragedy to his mate, as well as to the sledding community as a whole. He was 6 when he was killed by wolves during a run. Set was a prize sledder and a handsome purebred. those who knew his name mourn his passing. Sim never knew her father, but was saddened none the less. She spent her first few days in Dawson consoling her mother.
Day six was the day to change the future for Simoriah. She was sitting, patiently as she could, in her cage just outside a saloon. Master and Callah were inside, where Mr. Vaughn was talking dogs over a drink or two. Sim was -not- enjoying herself. Mother had said that this Dawson place was nice. Nice? Cold, yes. Dull, maybe. Nice...no way! She spent most of the afternoon and evening watching humans pass. As the night closed in, it was more like watching the drunks pass. And pass they did. Two happened to 'pass' right into her cage as they fought over who -knows- what. With a clatter to wake the nearest town there was broken cage all about, and a very distraught Sim out in the street. Drunk the men may have been, but only slightly less stupid. One made a grab for her collar, and with that, she slipped from it....and ran.
So here she was, a pet, a bitch with the naivete of a puppy, alone in the streets of a wintry land that did more than frighten her. For two days she remained pinned to the cold dirt under a porch, shivering like her bones would turn to dust. Where was her Master? Where was mother? She could not believe that she was still away from them.. She sorely missed the green grass and warmth of the Baltimore sun. She missed sitting at Master's feet, being pet and spoiled. She missed mother.
Some will accept pets, some will not, depends on how they've met them. This is what Sim had to learn. She had much to learn actually. Mother had taught her well about the ways of an indoor pet, but nothing could compare her for htis place. Everything was physical, fighting, finding food, surviving the cold. Everything Simoriah was not suited for. Sure, her breeding was proper for such climate, but she had never been exposed to cold such as this, or another bitch, aimed at dominating. Puzzled and scared out of her wits, Sim was lucky to find a few friendly hearts in town.
And so began her learning. Learning of dominance, of how to beat the cold, how to find a meal when a bowl isnt readily found. :it was hard for this bitch to learn about such things. She still walked tall and proud, despite what others would think of such an attitude. She still tried her best to keep clean, though the dirt followed her pearly fur. The despair over her collar was lessened when it was found, and replaced on her neck by a kindly human. After a while she even found a home to stay in, while she kept her ever vigilant watch for her Master and mother.
